City crews working to clean catch basins after Mardi Gras

City crews also placed screens to prevent clogging on St. Charles Avenue, while along other streets, orange "gutter buddies" were placed.

NEW ORLEANS – Following Mardi Gras, city crews will begin cleaning out catch basins, the Department of Public Works says.

Dani Galloway is in charge of overseeing catch basin clean up and says next week crews and vacuum trucks will be making the rounds.

"We'll pop a few lids and go back and go back along especially along the parade route,” Galloway said.

Cynthia Sylvain, the Director of Sanitation, says crews have been working on clean up since the first parade.

"Our general process for cleaning up is to rake everything into the center of the street we don't rake into the storm drain,” Sylvain said.

City crews also placed screens to prevent clogging on St. Charles Avenue, while along other streets, orange “gutter buddies” were placed.

Resident Crista Cocher says it’s hard not to wonder how the waste will impact the environment.

"After the parades clear out and you're walking home and you see the piles and piles of trash in the street it just kind of makes you think twice about what it all means,” Cocher said.
