Police arrest UNO student accused of making violent threats

School officials said that a student who lives on campus made threats against the university to two other students at the university

NEW ORLEANS – Police arrested the man who allegedly threatened to shoot several people at UNO, forcing officials to cancel early classes at the university.

According to NOPD, 20-year-old Nicholas Heard was arrested for terrorizing. Heard is accused of making direct threats to fellow students at the University of New Orleans on March 11.

Police arrested heard at his home in the 4800 block of Willow Street. No weapons were found at the location after police executed a search of the home.

Classes at UNO will resume at 5 p.m. on Monday, according to university officials.

Classes were canceled on Monday and employees were also advised to not report to work until police determine that there was no longer a threat to campus.

"Whenever the welfare of our campus community is threatened, it can be stressful and worrisome for everyone involved. In spite of that, I am enormously proud of the way our city and university community banded together during this difficult time. Please know that the safety of our students, employees and visitors is always paramount," University President John Nicklow said. "I would like to thank all of the law enforcement officials who were instrumental in resolving and managing this situation."

Ben Franklin High School, which is located on the UNO campus, will also be closed Monday out of an abundance of caution.
