NEW ORLEANS -- The son of a woman found dead in a New Orleans East ditch is behind bars, reportedly accused of killing her.

According to New Orleans Advocate, 44-year-old Byron Montgomery was booked with second-degree murder and obstruction of justice. Officials said he lived with his mother, Patricia Davis, 63, when the woman was found dead near Interstate-10 and Michoud Boulevard on Oct. 31, 2017.

A deputy with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office was also fired for allegedly lying about his decision to stop deputies from entering Davis' home less than a week before her body was discovered. Deputies who were called out to the area reportedly heard screams from inside the home, but Sgt. Christopher Gai decided deputies lacked probable cause to force their way inside the house.
