Red Cross aids 15 people after large fire in Destrehan

All eight units of the apartment complex were impacted by the fire, however only four of the units are deemed unlivable.

DESTREHAN - A large apartment fire displaced 15 people from 12 units in a complex on Brandon Hall Drive in Destrehan overnight.

The fire occurred at a multi-unit apartment fire along Ormond Avenue early Tuesday morning. All eight units of the apartment complex were impacted by the fire, however only four of the units are deemed unlivable, according to the American Red Cross.

Altiss Brown, who has lived in the neighborhood for more than a decade, said he was shocked to see the massive fire.

"It had a big 'ole blaze coming way up it was terrible," Brown said.

The fire destroyed the roof of the complex and some cars in the area were also damaged by the fire.One person was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene, however no other injuries or fatalities were reported.

Neighbors say they believe the fire started in the back of the building on the second floor. One person who lives directly across form the complex said he is grateful firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to other homes.

"When I pulled up, it was actually getting a little worse. You can see that it was coming down the side of the apartment and it was almost about to catch the tree and when I seen that it had me really scared in the moment," James Fletcher said.

The Louisiana Red Cross said they are working with the families to find temporary residences. Neighbors say they plan to go to their churches to see if they can help those who have been displaced the fire any way they can.
