Man killed in Hammond wreck tried to run across interstate, state police say

Police said the reason why Powell jumped out of his car is still under investigation.

HAMMOND, La. -- A man is dead after state police said he tried to run across a highway Friday night.

It happened on Interstate 55, just two miles north of University Avenue in Tangipahoa Parish around 10:35 p.m.

State Police said 24-year-old Archie Powell IV had just been involved in a single-car wreck on the right shoulder of I-55 when he got out of his car and ran across both lanes to the left shoulder. When Powell tried to run back across the highway, he was hit by a 2008 Nissan Maxima driven by a 31-year-old Slidell woman.

After that, Powell was hit again by a 2012 Chevrolet Malibu driven by a 36-year-old woman from Independence.

Both women provided breath samples to State Police which police said showed no alcohol.

Police said the reason why Powell jumped out of his car is still under investigation.
