NOPD: Man shoots at least 5 people, including officer, carjacks vehicle

Police say two shootings occurred in the St. Roch area on Sunday that left several injured and one dead.

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Police Department has arrested a man after several separate shootings in the St. Roch neighborhood Sunday that left at least five people injured, including an officer.

The first shooting occurred at a home in 1900 block of St. Roch Avenue when 25-year-old Charles Williams shot three people on the porch. Williams fired multiple rounds at them from his vehicle and then fled, NOPD said. Those victims are in stable condition. Police say that incident stemmed from a domestic dispute.

Following that shooting, Williams then went to the 1400 block of North Derbigny. Moments later a victim was shot in the face in the 1400 block of North Villere. Police say Williams was identified as the suspect in that shooting as well. The victim is currently in surgery, according to police.

Williams went to the 1700 block of Desire Parkway where he committed an armed carjacking. He then went back to the first shooting location, in the 1900 block of St. Roch Avenue, where officers were still processing the scene. Police say Williams then fired more rounds at officers from his vehicle and one officer was grazed in the chest by a bullet. That officer is currently in good condition, NOPD Chief Michael Harrison said.

Officers then chased Williams from St. Roch Avenue to the 1000 block of North Carrollton Avenue where he struck another vehicle. As a result, Williams' vehicle flipped upside down. He got out of the vehicle armed, however officers confronted him and he was arrested without incident.

Harrison said that Williams is being charged for the shootings and multiple armed robberies.

While police are still investigating the incidents, Harrison said a murder took place around the same time as the previous shootings. The murder took place in the 2400 block of Elysian Fields where one man was shot in the head while driving his vehicle. He succumbed to his injuries and crashed into the rear of a vehicle that was occupied by two people. Those individuals were taken to University Medical Center where they are in stable condition, police say.

Detectives are working to determine whether the murder on Elysian Fields is related to Williams' crime spree that occurred on Sunday. Additional information has not been released at this time. Anyone with information is asked to call Crimestoppers at 822-1111.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
