Nation's top prep football prospect commits to LSU

"This is a big time get for Ed Orgeron."

BATON ROUGE — LSU has just received a commitment from the No. 1 high school prospect in the country.

Derek Stingley Jr., a cornerback from The Dunham School in Baton Rouge, announced on Twitter minutes ago that he will be attending LSU beginning in January of 2019 after graduating early in December.

Stingley (6-foot-1, 195 pounds) chose LSU over Texas and Florida. His commitment is not binding. He can change his mind at any time between now and when he plans to sign scholarship papers in December, but he wanted to get his decision out of the way now so he could focus on his senior season of football at Dunham and not be bothered by the intensity of major college football recruiting.

Should Stingley indeed sign with LSU and Coach Ed Orgeron in December, it will make up for the loss of No. 1 ranked cornerback Patrick Surtain, who last February chose Alabama over LSU just before national signing day. LSU is thin at cornerback entering the 2018 season.

"This is a big time get for Ed Orgeron," recruiting expert Michael Scarborough of Tigerbait.com and Rivals.com said Wednesday. "Keeping the number one overall player in the nation home is huge. Plus, it's at a severe position of need after losing Patrick Surtain. Stingley is what you're used to seeing at cornerback at LSU - tall, long arms and physical. He will have every opportunity to start in the first game next season (2019)."
