Officer injured after handcuffed suspect gets loose, knocks her to the ground

The officer had placed the suspect in handcuffs, when the suspect got loose and knocked the officer to the ground.

NEW ORLEANS - An NOPD officer was injured after a shoplifting suspect got loose from handcuffs and knocked the officer to the ground Sunday evening.

The incident occurred just after 5 p.m. in the 9600 block of Chef Menteur Highway.

According to police, the officer was responding to a shoplifting incident and had placed the suspect, identified as 23-year-old Ishionte Jackson in handcuffs, when Jackson got loose and knocked the officer to the ground.

She was taken to the hospital suffering from a head injury. The suspect was apprehended by another officer.

There was no immediate information on the extent of the officer's injuries. Additional charges are expected to be levied against Jackson.
