Xavier basketball players' cars burglarized on campus while they're on road trip

Students are troubled the vehicle burglaries occurred on campus.

NEW ORLEANS - There are piles of broken glass near Short and Palm Streets on the Xavier University campus where someone broke into vehicles belonging to a group of the school's basketball players, Monday night.

Both the men's and women's teams played road games at William Carey University in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

An email sent to students confirmed the crimes. It stated, "The Xavier University Police Department (XUPD) is actively investigating six on-campus vandalism and vehicle break-ins that occurred last night that occurred last night, November 19, 2018, at 10:52 pm, along Short Street adjacent to the Convocation Center."

Students are troubled the vehicle burglaries occurred on campus.

"I feel like I'm generally safe, but to hear that something happened near where I go to school, it could happen to just anybody, it's kind of a little frightening," XU student Anthony Nguyen said.

Washington Avenue runs through the middle of the university. Xavier students say they don't feel as safe on the riverside of campus.

"We probably should have more of a community conversation on how, you know, our students are being treated on campus because it effects us," XU student Kyla Williams said. "A lot of us are nervous to park over there."

New Orleans police are now working with campus cops to investigate the break ins.

Xavier athletics would not identify the players whose vehicles were burglarized.

"That does sound like a shock to come back and to see that, you're car is damaged like that," Nguyen said.

There have been other crimes in the Gert Town area in recent days. In addition to the vehicle break ins, someone broke into the main office of a concrete business across the street from the XU Convocation Center, Saturday night.
