Marrero man killed in Jefferson Parish car crash

Police are investigating the fatal single-car crash.

JEFFERSON PARISH, La. — A Marrero man lost his life in a wreck Sunday morning after his car ran off the Earhart Expressway northbound, police said.

According to Louisiana State Police officials, the crash happened shortly before 8 a.m. as a man driving a Nissan Titan was exiting the Expressway northbound onto Clearview Parkway.

Police identified the driver as 35-year-old Simon Coker of Marrero.

Troopers are still unsure why the crash happened but said Coker's car ran off the road and onto the median, where it struck a concrete bridge support.

Police said the impact caused the Nissan to catch fire, trapping Coker inside. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Whether the drive was wearing a seat belt is still unknown, police said. A toxicology test will also be performed at a later date.
