NEW ORLEANS — In just six days, two deadly shootings have happened underneath the I-10 overpass on Claiborne Avenue and Canal Street.
Police are investigating the most recent fatal shooting that left one man dead overnight Saturday.
The man was found face down under the I-10 overpass suffering from a gunshot wound to the head and body. He was later pronounced dead on scene by EMS.
The incident occurred around 4:35 a.m.
It happened just feet away from where another man was killed last Sunday morning.
On Tuesday, New Orleans Coroner identified the two victims. The first is Phillip Thomas, 51. The most recent is Morris Irvin, 30.
The shootings have area workers like Antoinette Cotton worried.
"People are killing for no reason these days, they don't have to know you," Cotton said. "I'm thinking about myself. Is something going to happen to me when I get out of my car in the morning?"
The area is populated with a number of homeless people, many of who suffer from substance abuse and mental health issues.
Police said it's too early to tell if the two shootings are related. Officers said they are hopeful a person of interest wanted for questioning pictured below will provide important information.
