NEW ORLEANS — The New Orleans City Council honored former WWL-TV Chief Meteorologist Carl Arredondo Thursday.
Arredondo retired March 1 due to failing eyesight from a condition known as Retinitis Pigmentosa, which is described on the National Eye Institute’s website as a “rare, genetic disorder that involves a breakdown and loss of cells in the retina.”
Council members honored Arredondo for his 28-year career at WWL-TV, keeping the community informed through his top-notch weather forecasts, especially during the city’s most pivotal times. Arredondo was the only TV meteorologist on the air during Hurricane Katrina. He also led coverage of hurricanes Andrew, Gustav, Isaac and Ivan, just to name a few.

Arredondo was also honored for stepping into his new role at Lighthouse Louisiana where he will continue to raise awareness surrounding vision problems and his vision disorder.

Council member Joe Giarrusso described Arredondo’s time at WWL-TV as “incredible service to New Orleans” and a “fantastic career.”
Arredondo took to social media to express his gratitude and excitement by Tweeting, “I’m very humbled and honored for this recognition. Thank you to New Orleans City Council!!”
