NEW ORLEANS — The New Orleans Police Dept. is investigating a triple-shooting in New Orleans East directly across from a school.
No students were hurt, but it made for quite a scare as students at Mildred Osborne Charter School on Curran Blvd. were playing in the school yard Wednesday afternoon when the shots rang out.
At least three people were hurt. Two victims were found behind the school. A third victim arrived at the hospital with a gunshot wound to the body, police said.
Wanda Ard was standing with her niece in front of her house, which sits across from the school, when she says she heard “a hail of gunshots.”
“A first round rang out and then a second round of gunshots came through,” said Ard who says students at the K-8 school heard the gunfire, too. “Kids started screaming and running everywhere.”
School staff acted quickly, according to Ard.
“They did get the kids in the school and shut the school down so that was a good thing but it’s just ridiculous,” Ard said. “It was right by the school.”
After that, Ard says she saw a car speeding away from the direction of Wales street.
“I assume that was probably either a car getting out of the way or the car that was doing the shooting,” Ard said.
No students were students were hurt but it was close, Ard said.
“I mean, it’s like are you serious? You are shooting, there are kids in the yard, playing and any one of them could have been accidentally hit,” Ard said.
Police aren’t saying much, it’s early in the investigation, but neighbors are hopeful officers will get to the bottom of this using surveillance footage from the neighbors and school.
“They are going to catch y'all,” Ard said. “It’s going to be a matter of time but they are going to catch you all because guess what you are going to be stopped, you have to be stopped, and you will be stopped."
It’s still unclear if the NOPD has any suspects.
