Pedestrian killed crossing I-10 remembered as hardworking family man

“He was always polite, always wanted to work, always was anxious to help someone."

KENNER, La. — Authorities identify the man who was killed in the deadly accident on the interstate Monday as 57-year-old Jimmy Douglas.

Police say Douglas was returning home from work when he ran across the eastbound lanes of I-10 and was struck by a car.

“As Mr. Douglas made it to the center lane a vehicle occupying that lane made an invasive maneuver to the left one of travel where the vehicle and Mr. Douglas made contact," Lt. Russell Moran of the Kenner Police Department said.

Police say they don't know why he chose to cross the interstate on foot, since that's not his normal route.

Douglas lived in the Lincoln Manor neighborhood, where family and friends are mourning his death.

“He grew up around my kids, he was such a humble person.” Lillie May Howard, a close friend of Douglas' said. “He was always polite, always wanted to work, always was anxious to help someone."

Howard said Douglas was studying to become a deacon and that he was a passionate man of faith.

The loss is hitting police hard as well.

“He’s a father, he’s a husband, he’s a grandfather, he’s a great grandfather," Lt. Moran said.

Police say drugs and alcohol are not expected to be a factor in this accident and no charges will be given to the driver at this time.
