State police are investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash that killed a LaPlace man riding his motorcycle Sunday afternoon, officials say.

Initial Louisiana State Police reports show the crash happened on W. Airline Highway (US-61) near Cambridge Drive in LaPlace around 4:30 p.m.

A man riding a Yamaha motorcycle, identified as 47-year-old Clifton Campbell, was headed northbound on the highway when, for reasons under investigation, a driver headed the opposite direction in a Ford pickup truck turned left in front of his path.

Campbell hit the Ford and was ejecting from his motorcycle, officials said. While he was wearing a safety helmet at the time of the crash, he was pronounced dead on the scene a short time lately.

The incident is under investigation, police said. Increased speed was not cited as a potential cause of the crash.

Samples from the deceased sent to state testing labs will determine if impairment was a factor. Impairment on the part of the pickup driver was not suspected, officials said.
