Another juvenile arrested in Mid-City carjacking shooting, faces murder

It's the third arrest connected to last week's shooting of a couple as they were being carjacked near Broad St.

NEW ORLEANS — Another teenager was arrested and booked with murder Tuesday after a 17-year-old allegedly fatally shot a woman and wounded her husband after they caught him breaking into their car, police say.

According to New Orleans Police Department officials, on the night of May 8, a group of people attempted to break into a car in the 2700 block of Cleveland Avenue, near Broad Street, when the alarm went off and the owners came outside.

That's when they saw 17-year-old Emanuel Pipkins inside their car. The husband, armed with a gun, started to approach him when other's inside Pipkin's getaway car spotted him and "...shouted from that vehicle to shoot," according to NOPD Superintendent Shaun Ferguson.

Ferguson said there was an exchange of gunfire between Pipkins and the husband. His wife, identified as 63-year-old Zelda Townsend, was shot in the head and he was shot in the arm. They were taken to the hospital, where she later died from her wounds.

Pipkins, who had a previous aggravated assault charge, was arrested and booked on second-degree murder and other burglary counts.

On Tuesday night, NOPD officials announced a second juvenile was arrested and charged with second degree murder, burglary and conspiracy to commit burglary in connection to the killing.

It's the third arrest in connection to the killing.

Pipkin's girlfriend, 18-year-old Bryeille Herbert, was allegedly in the getaway car. She was booked with manslaughter last week after initially being offered a low bond and released on a lesser charge.
