SLIDELL, La. — For this week's Access Code, we're headed to St. Tammany Parish and checking out on one of Slidell's three ZIP codes: 70460.
One attraction you may not be aware of that is in this ZIP code is Indian Hills - the only nudist park in the state of Louisiana. The 50-acre, gated community has been in existence for 48 years.
"People say once they come behind these doors, everything else is left behind. And that's exactly how it is. You forget everything else," owner Hilda Kraemer said.
Back in 1991, Kraemer herself was skeptical about the idea of a nudist colony, but her husband wanted to try it.
"You know, you do anything for your husband. So we came out one day and after we came in and met all the people here, we loved it!" Kraemer said. "We went back home, got our camper and have been here every weekend since."
That was 28 years ago!
Truedell Impastato has been a member since the 1980s.
"It's my happy place! You don't have to worry about anything. Everything is lovely, peaceful, no qualms. Nobody cares what you look like," Impastato said. "You're just accepted and loved no matter your shape, your color."
If you are bashful, your secret is safe in Indian Hills. Although they say it's people you'd never expect. Truedell isn't hiding it from anyone.
"My parents know. My parents are going to be watching this. I told them to record it!" Truedell said.
It's not about sex, it's about freedom. In fact, there are very strict rules. There are daily fees, or you can become a member. Campers are welcome and there are rentals available.
And for those of you still on the fence:
"Oh try it! I mean, it's fun! We have volleyball, steak night, pot lucks, naked Easter egg hunts," Kraemer said. "We have Christmas in July, naked Olympics. All sorts of activities. Not just hanging out by the pool. It's mingling with friends and family."
