Gretna police save 71-year-old woman from burning building

Seconds after her rescue, parts of the building began falling down

GRETNA, La. — Gretna police saved the life of an elderly woman Saturday morning, pulling her from a burning building seconds before it collapsed.

Around 12:30 a.m., officers responded to a 911 call at a home in the 1200 block of Chilo Street. The caller reported the house was on fire.

Responding officers arrived to see the front of the house engulfed in flames. In the backyard, a 71-year-old woman was trapped behind a locked gate.

Officers used physical strength and tools to make an exit for the victim, escorting her to safety moments before live wires and debris began falling from the residence.

The home was completely burned down, but the woman was not injured.

Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the fire.
