NEW ORLEANS — The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has updated their 2021 hurricane outlook Wednesday morning.
Comparing the pre-season outlook released in May, there is a bit of an increase in named storms and hurricanes expected.
They still call for an above average hurricane season with 15-21 named storms, 7-10 hurricanes and 3-5 major hurricanes.
With Elsa forming in the Atlantic basin during early July we were on a record pace. But after Elsa the tropics remained pretty quiet.
Now that the beginning of August is here, there are three areas in the Atlantic basin being watched. A reminder that we are getting closer to the peak period of hurricane season which is usually mid-August through October.
So far, we've had 5 named tropical systems for the 2021 hurricane season.
