NEW ORLEANS — Two beloved cougars at Audubon Zoo passed away due to severe kidney disease and failure, the zoo posted on its Facebook page Thursday.
Cougars Pontchartrain and Maurepas were 16 years old. "They both loved to lounge in the sun, eat their favorite foods like beef tips and knuckle bones, play with cabbage heads, shred boxes, and rub all over stinky smells from other animals," Audubon said in a post on Facebook.
Their care team described Maurepas as shy while Pontchartrain was a "social butterfly".
The two cougars came from Washington and arrived at Audubon Zoo in 2008 when they were just three-month-old kittens.
