De La Salle caps undefeated girls flag football season with inaugural championship win

Cavaliers defeated Academy of Our Lady Penguins 19-0 at the Brees Family Field to complete undefeated season.

NEW ORLEANS — De La Salle finished the Saints Girls High School Flag Football season undefeated after winning the inaugural championship game 19-0 over Academy of Our Lady on the Brees Family Field at The Willow School on Saturday.

Both teams were awarded medals by Saints legend Tyrone Hughes to celebrate their season.

"I've been trying to play football since eighth grade and now that it's finally a sport and they are finally putting it into action, it feels really good to win a championship for the first time ever," said De La Salle's Kirsten Robinson after the win.

There were hundreds in attendance for the championship and all 10 teams played their final games of the year.

The New Orleans Saints launched its own Saints Girls High School Flag Football league back in April. Saints said the goal of the program is to have the Louisiana High School Athletic Association officially recognize Girls Flag Football as a sanctioned sport.

The season was a success, said Elicia Broussard Sheridan, senior director of social unification and youth sports development for the Saints.

"With the effort that has been shown, the engagement and interest that has taken place over the last couple months with this inaugural season," Sheridan said. "Hopefully, that will be enough to convince them that this a thing that is here and here to stay and has the potential to grow into something really huge."

The pilot season included participation from 10 schools across Orleans and Jefferson Parishes including:

  • Academy of Our Lady High School
  • Alfred Bonnabel Magnet Academy High School
  • De La Salle High School
  • East Jefferson High School
  • Lycée Français de la Nouvelle-Orléans
  • McDonogh 35 College Preparatory High School
  • Sarah T. Reed Senior High School
  • Sophie B. Wright High School
  • The Willow School
  • West Jefferson High School
